WHAT IS AN EPK
If you have never had one before, an Electronic Press Kit (or EPK, for short) is a document that should showcase what an artist is all about. It should have clear links to your music, website and social media, it acts as a central point for you to introduce your act and what you’re about. The most important thing to think about when sending an EPK is how it is going to be viewed from the other side of the fence. Put yourself in the position of a promoter, potential manager or booking agent…
A great bio is dramatically important to connect with the right crowd and industry professionals. Writing a Bio is the trickiest and most important part of an EPK. Your biography is the fundamental part of the press kit; it is your chance to show other people the highlights of you career.
Having a well written biography is a skilled task, The information needs to be clear and concise, detailed enough to give the reader an insight, but not so detailed that it becomes boring and turns them off (apart from your mum does anybody really care that you got grade 5 piano aged 12?). Focusing more on your recent and current activities keep things brief relevant and current.
Professional photographs are a must for any press kit and the images should always be hi-resolution (at least 300 dpi). Even jpeg’s suffer from loss of quality as they are massively compressed so wherever possible use the best quality file format available. Having some transparent pngs are useful for features on flyers or social media graphics. Print magazines will always request high-resolution images and not having these available could restrict you from achieving high profile features.
The importance of having strong branding is invaluable as the battle for artists intensifies day by day. It's important to spend time investing, researching, defining, and building your brand. After all, your brand is the source of a promise to your consumer.
Your brand is a foundational piece in your marketing communication and one you do not want to be without. That's why it carries a great deal of importance for any artist. Including logos in a EPK (again hi-resolution artwork is important) and in several formats jpg, transparent png, ai or eps.
We live in a social media world, there is no denying that and if you think that you as an artist can succeed bypassing them, you are in for a rude awakening.Times have changed, finding success in the music industry can be attributed to a multitude of things but one of the most important ones is your “internet” presence.
Having a Facebook page you rarely ever update is no longer good enough. Fans want more, fans deserve more, they are craving for content in different types of formats and if you are not feeding them, the competition surely is.
Linking to social media is vital, Facebook, Twitter, Instgram, Website, Soundcloud. store links and any thing else if applicable.
